Free Resources for Wesleyan Churches
For many people “Christmas” instantly brings to mind lists, parties, relatives, and exhaustion. Instead of being distracted by the clutter of activity around Christmas, help everyone prepare for the holidays through the eyes of heaven.
The Spiritual Formation Department of The Wesleyan Church prepared this FREE Christmas resource to help pastors and teachers share about the gifts Jesus gives to everyone, everyday of the year.
What is Advent?
Advent (from the Latin word adventus, meaning "coming") is a season of the Christian church, the period of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus, in other words, the period immediately preceding Christmas.
Latin adventus is the translation of the Greek word parousia, commonly used in reference to the Second Coming. Christians believe that the season of Advent serves a dual reminder of the original waiting that was done by the Hebrews for the birth of their Messiah, as well as the preparation and waiting of Christians today, awaiting the second coming of Christ.
The theme of readings and teachings during Advent is often to prepare for the Second Coming while commemorating the First Coming of Christ at Christmas.
