A Humble Misconception

1 Peter 5:6-10

After you have suffered a little while, [God] will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
(1 Pet. 5:10)\

BLACK HOLES ARE NOTORIOUSLY STRONG. Their gravitational pull is so powerful that even light can't escape them. But these strong holes don't start out that way. Black holes are formed after the death of a giant star. When giant stars run out of fuel, gravity takes over and they collapse in on themselves and then explode. Thus a black hole is born. But it's interesting to note that in order for this strong black hole to develop, the star has to die first. Peter has a lot to say to the young men in this passage of Scripture. He calls them to be humble and submissive to those who are older and wiser. He tells them to be self-controlled, to be alert, and to endure the sufferings they share with others around the world. Doing so will lead to restoration. They will become strong, firm, and steadfast. But first they must allow themselves to be humbled. Being humble is often associated with being weak. But this is a misconception. To be humble is the opposite of being proud. It's thinking of others before ourselves. It takes a strong person to put others first. It's after the giant star dies that it becomes a strong black hole. It's after we humble ourselves that we become strong Christians.
