Faith in Action Day

On October 11, 2009, congregants from Bagley Swamp Wesleyan Church in Hertford, N.C., demonstrated that the Church isn't simply a building.
Attendees participated in a day of serving the community. "This was a church-wide campaign that transformed our congregation, impacted our community, and helped our church touch the world," said James Spaugh, lead pastor.
The church completed seven projects within the community. One group repaired a roof and fixed a porch. Another group performed a yard transformation by removing trees and brush, cleaning out flower beds and pruning trees. A group helped a family with electrical, window, and door repairs to their home. A group of adults, teens, and children picked up trash at the Perquimans County High School football field and other locations.
Painting and power-washing were done at the local Parks and Recreation Department. Shelves were installed for the local food pantry, and a group stayed back at the church fellowship hall to bake goodies and make crafts that were delivered to the residents and staff at a local nursing home. All projects were accomplished at 1:00 pm, and all who helped were invited back to the fellowship hall for lunch and to tell stories from the day. Overall, 96 people from Bagley Swamp helped serve the community.
"It is exciting to move outside the walls of our building," said Spaugh. "The Church is not a location, it is a group of Christ followers sent out to bring healing and hope to our community.
"Our motto is connecting people with God . . . and each other,'" Spaugh says. "We think that phrase accurately describes what this day was all about."
