Philippines Wesleyans Assist Other Victims

Oct. 19, 2009

In expressing gratitude to The Wesleyan Church's Board of General Superintendents for "responding in love" in committing an initial grant from the Wesleyan Emergency Relief Fund, Rev. Alberto Patacsil, General Superintendent of the Philippines General Conference, said that recovery efforts continue from damages by Typhoons Ketsana and Pepeng. He said Wesleyans are distributing pails containing kilos of rice, noodles and other goods to victims of the typhoons, which claimed over 600 lives.

A recent report from Wesleyan leaders in the Philippines said flooding had crippled transportation, shut businesses, and destroyed homes in Metro Manila, and also did extensive damage in central and northern parts of Luzon. In Metro Manilia, 347 Wesleyan church member families were directly affected.

According to Board of General Superintendents Chair, Dr. Jerry G. Pence, disaster response efforts are being coordinated with World Hope International. He also said individuals and churches can make the most immediate impact by cash donations online to World Hope International at www.worldhope.org. (Click on "Donate Now" on the left-hand navigation bar.) Gifts should be clearly marked for "Filipino typhoon response."
