Historic Freedom Hill Location on NC Civil War Trail
Jul. 27, 2010
The Wesleyan Methodist congregation founded by Adam Crooks in the mid-1800’s stood bravely against the human slavery trade and suffered greatly at the hands of their slaveholding neighbors.
The site of the Freedom’s Hill Wesleyan Methodist Church in North Carolina’s rural Alamance County is scheduled to be placed on the state’s Civil War Trail map, the second most requested map published by the state of North Carolina.
The Civil War Trails run through Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina, with more than 200 sites in the Old North State. Freedom’s Hill was the first Wesleyan Methodist Church in the south founded by Adam Crooks in 1847–with the building occupied in 1848. The portions of the building that were redeemable were moved to the campus of Southern Wesleyan University from the old Colfax Campgrounds and incorporated into the historic replica that was rebuilt there. A highway marker, sponsored by the North Carolina East and West Districts, is scheduled to be placed near the site, not far from the present Pleasant Union church near Snow Camp. In addition, Victory Mountain Camp has plans to erect a replica of the old church at the head of Heritage Trail on the campgrounds sometime in the future.
