IWU’s Coverstone Seeing Success in Australia

After a record setting men's basketball career at Indiana Wesleyan University where he finished with 1,839 points, 1,074 rebounds and 289 blocks, Coverstone has continued his dominant performance in his first season of professional basketball.

Houghton Team Travels to Europe

The Houghton College women’s basketball team just returned from a brief stint in Europe.
But this trip was no vacation. The Lady Highlanders left Houghton, NY, and traveled to both Germany and Czech Republic to serve through teaching basketball skills, playing games, and building relationships. The women also visited local schools and assisted in English classes. Both current Houghton players and alumni participated in the 11-day mission trip.
IWU Baseball Alum Named All-Star

Indiana Wesleyan University alum Brandon Moore has been chosen to compete in the South Atlantic League (SAL) All-Star Game to be held June 22 in Greenville, South Carolina.
Moore will be one of six players to represent the Savannah Sand Gnats, a Class A affiliate of the New York Mets.

Daktronics-NAIA Track & Field Scholar-Athletes
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that a total of 548 track and field student-athletes have been named 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Track and Field Scholar-Athletes.
Nominated by each institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status to qualify.

More than 2,000 athletes and coaches from throughout North America are gathered at Indiana Wesleyan University for today’s opening of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The men’s and women’s championships, which are expected to attract another 3,000 spectators, continue through Saturday.
SWU Golfers Tee Up in Chamber Tourney

Members of the Southern Wesleyan University Golf Team were on hand during the 17thannual Easley Chamber Golf Tournament on May 4 at Smithfield Country Club in Easley, S.C.
Coach Doug Wilkinson chose four players to serve at the event. Tournament players could purchase a drive from one of the SWU team members as a fundraiser for the local chamber of commerce. This is the first year SWU golf players have assisted with the event.

IWU's 11th place standing at the end of round three has the Wildcats making the cut to play in the final round of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Men's Golf National Championship at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.

Softball
IWU softball season came to a close Saturday with a third place finish at the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) National Championship in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University avenged an earlier loss to IWU in the national championship with a 2-0 victory. Indiana Wesleyan won the earlier meeting on Friday by a 7-4 margin.
IWU Tennis Ready for Tournament Play

Indiana Wesleyan University men’s and women’s tennis teams are gearing up for tournament play.
The men will battle Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship first in Mobile, Alabama. The opening round match will be on Tuesday, May 18 (2 p.m. EST).

IWU chimes in at No. 12 in the final National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men's Golf Coaches' Top-25 Poll, released Friday evening.
The Wildcats remained steady at No. 12 from the last poll released two weeks ago. Since the last ranking, IWU has completed a pair of runner-up finishes at the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) 36-Hole Invitational and the Mid-Central College Conference Championship.

Indiana Wesleyan University softball scored two shutout victories on Thursday afternoon the Wildcats swept visiting University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at Wildcat Field in Marion, Indiana.

Coverstone Signs Pro Basketball Contract

Shortly after being named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-American First Team, 6’9” senior center Zach Coverstone signed a contract to continue his basketball career in Australia following graduation in May.
Under contract, Coverstone will play with the Wanneroo Wolves of the State Basketball League of Western Australia.

Ellis Hired to Lead SWU Volleyball Program

Chris Williams, director of athletics at Southern Wesleyan University, announced that Jennifer Ellis has been hired as the volleyball program’s new head coach.
Ellis brings solid credentials to the volleyball program, having earned her master’s degree in counseling/human relations from Liberty University. She completed her undergraduate work at Mississippi University for Women where she was a defensive specialist/setter as a four-year starter. While at Mississippi University for Women, Ellis compiled 3,800 total assists and set a school record for assists in one match with 66.

The annual Indiana Wesleyan University Polar Bear Outdoor Track and Field Invitational took place on Saturday, March 27, under sunny conditions and near 60-degree weather.
The non-scoring meet hosted teams from all levels of competition with programs from NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and all three divisions of NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association).

The Southern Wesleyan University cheerleaders placed second in the college division of the 2010 Christian Cheerleaders of America Christian Cheer Nationals, held March 6, at the Cabarrus Arena in Concord, N.C.
More than 50 divisions and 200 high school and college teams attended the competition.
IWU Track & Field Competes at NCAA’s Wake Forest

The Indiana Wesleyan University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams faced some elite competition over the weekend at the Wake Forest Open in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The Wildcats competed against programs from top conference in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I among others. Wake Forest University, University of North Carolina, Ohio University, West Virginia University, Duke University and University of Pennsylvania were a few of the schools to compete against Indiana Wesleyan.
In the large meet, ten Wildcats in eight events placed in the top 10.
Indiana Wesleyan will return to the track next weekend as the school hosts the annual Polar Bear Invitational on Saturday, March 27. The meet is set to begin at 12 p.m.
Coverstone Named NAIA All-American First Team

Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball senior center Zach Coverstone capped off his stellar collegiate career by being the first Wildcat to be named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II All-American First-Team.
The Columbia City, Indiana, native built upon his solid junior season in which he was named All-American Honorable Mention and All-MCC Second Team. Coverstone was also named to the All-MCC Third Team as a sophomore.
Five Students Recognized as NAIA Scholar-Athletes

Five Houghton College student-athletes have been recognized as scholar-athletes for their hard work and dedication on the court as well as in the classroom. The Highlanders are represented with three athletes from the women’s basketball team and two athletes from the men’s basketball team receiving the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete Award. This award is presented to junior and senior students who hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above and have obtained a nomination from their coach.
IWU Baseball Sweeps in Home Doubleheader

Indiana Wesleyan University swept its opponent in the team’s home opening doubleheader on March 17.
IWU beat Siena Heights in two games, 5-3 and 7-0.
Indiana Wesleyan never trailed the entire afternoon as IWU scored three runs in the second inning in game one. Following Siena Heights’ run in the fourth inning, Indiana Wesleyan added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Seasons End for Wesleyan Basketball Teams

Monday night proved to be a tough one for two Wesleyan university basketball teams.
The Oklahoma Wesleyan University men’s basketball team lost to St. Francis University (Ind.), 77-73, in a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II Final Four matchup in Point Lookout, Missouri.
IWU Women’s Basketball Steamrolls Top Seed for Spot in NAIA Semifinal

Defense continues to carry the No. 3-seed Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball team through the NAIA National Championship as IWU defeated top-seed College of the Ozarks (Mo.) 68-50 in the national quarterfinal in Sioux City, Iowa.
The three Wildcat opponents during the tournament have averaged 73.3 points per game during the season. In the three tournament games, those three teams averaged just 47.3 points and no team has scored more than 50 points.
Defense Stumps Concordia as IWU Women’s Basketball Advances to Sweet 16

In typical Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball fashion, the Wildcats harassed Concordia (Neb.) University all night long en route to a 56-42 victory in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II National Championship first round in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Bulldogs were limited to 23.7-percent (14 of 59) shooting for the night and 10.0-percent (1 of 10) from 3-point range.
“It was a great effort tonight all around,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Steve Brooks. “We set the tone early defensively against a very good team. If we didn’t make so many mistakes on the offensive end they would not have scored as much as they did on the other end.”
IWU Indoor Track and Field Competes at NAIA National Championship

Indiana Wesleyan University took part in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Indoor Track and Field National Championships this weekend in Johnson City, Tennessee.
The men’s team scored four points to place 38th with 54 teams denting the scoring column. The women did not register a point. Indiana Wesleyan’s best event at the national championship meet was in the long jump with one female and male earning a spot in the finals.

The Houghton College Highlanders indoor track & field team sent a few female runners to Johnson City, TN, to compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Track and Field Championship.
The Houghton women’s team consisting of Heather Sayre (Wellsboro, PA), Courtney Coiro (Mentor, OH), Darby Emerson (Windsor, CO), and Danielle Brenon (Endwell, NY) represented the Highlanders.
OWU’s Briggs Reaches 2000-point Club

For many college basketball players, the idea of reaching 1,000 points in their career is a goal that would never be reached. But for Oklahoma Wesleyan University senior guard Steve Briggs, it was just a stepping-stone.
Last weekend in a 77-56 victory over Peru State College (Neb.), Briggs doubled the usually untouchable milestone, finishing the ball game with 13 points, moving him into third place on the OKWU scoring list with 2,013. Following a 17-point output on the following night, the 2009 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) First Team All-American is just 16 points away from the second spot in school history.
IWU Women’s Basketball Clinches MCC Title

Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball captured the seventh Mid-Central College Conference regular season championship in program history following a 65-45 win over Grace (Ind.) College on Wednesday night in Luckey Arena.
“I’m excited because it has been a couple years since we won the conference championship,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Steve Brooks. “We earned home court advantage in the tournament and that was one of our goals heading into the season.”
Brenon Leads Highlanders at Kane Invitational

The Houghton Highlanders indoor track and field team competed in the Kane Invitational at Cornell University on Saturday, February 13. Some Highlanders set personal records and two athletes qualified for nationals.
Sophomore Danielle Brenon (Endwell, NY) automatically qualified for the NAIA indoor nationals in the mile run. Brenon came in seventh with a time of 5:09.23. This is the second best time for the mile in Houghton history. Junior Darby Emerson (Windsor, CO) provisionally qualified in the open 800M as she finished with a time of 2:21.09 which was good enough for third place.
“Pink Out” Night Set for Upcoming IWU Women’s Basketball Game

Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball will hold a “Pink Out’ night on Wednesday, February 17, against Grace (Ind.) College to help raise awareness for breast cancer.
All gate money and donations made will be given to the Cancer Services of Grant County. A special collection will be taken at halftime and 100 percent of all money raised will remain in Grant County.
Lagroone Reaches 1,000 points in SWU Loss

Southern Wesleyan University’s Nick Lagroone reached the 1,000 point total in the team’s recent 83-80 loss to Tennessee Temple University. The leading scorer in the Southern States Athletic Conference finished the night with 1,010 career points after scoring 15.
IWU Men’s and Women’s Tennis Ranked in Preseason Poll

Indiana Wesleyan University’s men’s and women’s tennis teams will both begin their seasons ranked in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Tennis Coaches’ Top-25 Preseason Poll.
The men’s team enters the poll ranked No. 24 after finishing last season with a 9-1 overall record and a perfect 7-0 in the Mid-Central College Conference. The Wildcats also won the MCC Tournament championship.

Lady Warriors enter the tournament as the second seed
The Southern Wesleyan women’s basketball team will serve as host of next week’s National Christian College Athletic Association South Region Tournament.
In addition to Southern Wesleyan, the other teams participating in the tournament are Emmanuel College, North Greenville University, and Truett-McConnell College. The first round games will be played on Tuesday, February 16 with the championship game to be played the following night.
IWU Indoor Track and Field Hosts IWU Invitational

Indiana Wesleyan University indoor track and field served as host for the second consecutive weekend with the IWU Invitational in the indoor sports complex.
The invitational featured some big programs such as Ball State (Ind.) University and the University of Indianapolis, in addition to some Mid-Central College Conference programs and NCAA Division III schools.
IWU Men’s Basketball Shows Support with Coaches vs. Cancer

Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball defeated Marygrove (Mich.) College 83-51 in non-conference action on Saturday in Luckey Arena.
While the win was a highlight, both coaching staffs showed their support in fighting cancer as all wore tennis shoes with suits in support of Coaches v. Cancer and the ‘Suits and Sneakers’ initiative. Through gate receipts and promotions, Indiana Wesleyan raised $500 to donate to the American Cancer Society.
Two Highlanders Recognized for Achievements

On a night of recognition for the accomplishments of two Houghton College women’s basketball team members in front of a large, supportive crowd, the Lady Highlanders (13-6, 8-4) did not disappoint beating the #20 Walsh University Cavaliers, 62-59, last week.
The Highlanders recognized senior Leah French (Owego, NY) for her 1,000 point career as a Highlander and junior Ashley Dupler (Jamestown, NY) who firmly holds first place in blocked shots in her Houghton career. As always, both were critical in the matchup. French added 14 points to her staggering career total and Dupler scored 20 points. They each also picked up six rebounds.

The 2010 baseball season is right around the corner and the Southern Wesleyan baseball team will waste no time in playing quality opponents. They will travel to Erskine College on February 1, before hosting Bluefield College in the home opener on February 5.
Thompson Scores 1,000th Career Point

Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball junior forward Kayla Thompson drained a 3-point basket early in the second half against Bethel (Ind.) College on Wednesday evening to reach 1,000 career points.
Thompson is the second Wildcat this season to reach the milestone as junior forward Elaine Hessel accomplished the feat on January 7 against Spring Arbor (Mich.) University. She becomes the 22nd player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

The Lady Highlanders (12-6, 7-4) commanded the second half of their contest against the Malone University Pioneers finishing with a 79-61 victory. Ashley Dupler (Jamestown, NY) had a double-double, finishing with 28 points and 11 rebounds.

Indiana Wesleyan University men’s and women’s basketball squads hold the same ranking in the most recent National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Basketball Coaches’ Top-25 Poll.
For the IWU men, it’s the highest this season since they opened No. 9 in the preseason poll. Following a 5-3 stat to the season, IWU fell completely out of the rankings in the first and second regular season poll.
SWU Softball Assists Habitat for Humanity

As the Southern Wesleyan University softball team prepares for their season opener on February 4, they took time away from the softball diamond to help a local family in need.
On Saturday, January 23, the Warriors participated in a “Women Build” for Habitat for Humanity and spent several hours assisting in the building of a house for a family in Liberty, S.C., seven miles from the SWU campus. During their time at the project site, the softball team worked on the framing of the front and back walls of the house. They attached plywood to the walls and were able to raise the walls. Three other SWU students also served alongside the softball team.

Southern Wesleyan University men’s basketball coach Charles Wimphrie won his 300th career basketball game on Thursday after his Warriors defeated Voorhees College, 120-96.
OKWU Men Extends Win Streak to 36 Games

Domination on the boards lifted the Oklahoma Wesleyan University men’s basketball team to a victory over Central Bible College (Mo.), 85-60. The Eagles out-rebounded the Spartans by 23, finishing the ballgame with 42.
The win moves the Eagles record to 18-0 on the season.
