For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom. 3:23)

Expanded Passage: John 1:12; Romans 3:23; 5:8; 6:23; 10:9; 12:1–2; Ephesians 2:8–9; Revelation 3:20

The seminary professors progressed into chapel, garbed in their academic apparel and ordered by seniority. The assembly watched respectfully, acknowledging the professors’ knowledge and ability to train ministerial students called by God to serve God’s people.

I watched, having been part of the seminary community for a few years. I recalled, upon arriving, my almost reverential esteem for the faculty. My esteem always remained high, but became seasoned with the knowledge that professors are people, too, trying to live their lives for Christ as best they can.

Professors became traveling companions. They shared personal sorrows, asked for advice and opinions, prayed openly and often, failed and succeeded. We broke bread together, laughed and cried together.

Twelve men, because of Jesus’ personalized training and equipping, became esteemed among believers and were labeled “Jesus’ disciples.” Their life stories reveal betrayal, ego, doubt. They were real people, trying to live their lives for Christ as best they could.

God doesn’t expect us, alone, to be more than we are able. That’s why Jesus Christ died for us and why the Holy Spirit was sent to abide in us. God’s glory is available for us and can be reflected through us, but only if we acknowledge our sinful nature, accept Christ as our Savior, and remain attuned to the Holy Spirit’s wisdom.

God’s kingdom is made up of real people. Become their traveling companion.

Enjoy life’s journey and your companions.
