Why a million miles?
The Million Mile Prayer Walk™ is a rally cry for earnest Christ-followers to pursue God for spiritual awakening and life transformation, leading to revival in our country and beyond.
Three miles per hour (3 mph). Twenty minutes per mile. That was the speed Scottish mountaineer William W. Naismith calculated the average person walks over normal terrain when he came up with “Naismith’s Rule” in 1892 to help plan hiking expeditions. Today, twenty minutes per mile is the same basic unit we’ve chosen for measuring another kind of progress. It’s for those who become partners on the Million Mile Prayer Walk. Each “mile” represents someone praying at least 20 minutes for God’s will to be done and for His kingdom to come among us with power (in other words, for His lordship to reign over every aspect of our lives, our communities, and the nations of the earth).
The Church of Jesus Christ exists to exalt God by spreading His transformational hope and holiness everywhere. It’s a mission that can only be accomplished through intentional prayer, faithful obedience, and holy living. A million miles simply represents the passionate commitment of thousands of Christ-followers to fulfill the Great Commission (making disciples) in the spirit of the Great Commandment (loving God and loving other people wholeheartedly). The MMPW “odometer” on our website is a constant, visual reminder of the growing unity of our prayer movement.
Learning to pray in one accord is a way to align our lives with Christ’s purposes and to experience more of the Holy Spirit’s power as we tell others about the Lord and demonstrate His love to them in practical ways. So, throughout the calendar year, individuals and congregations are urged to engage in focused prayer for a global revival like none of us has ever seen! We long for God to awaken our families, friends, neighbors, communities, and cultures to the realization of His love and to transform them by faith in His Son Jesus Christ.
