Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! (Ps. 53:6)

Expanded Passage: Psalm 53

When I was quite young, I was playing upstairs at my grandparents’ house at night and I noticed the light switch in the hallway. I suppose my young mind wanted to know how dark it would be if I turned the lights off. However, I was not prepared for the darkness I encountered. I became overwhelmed and thought I was doomed to live in that darkness the rest of my life. After feeling the wall and not being able to find the switch, I sat down and cried until my mom came to get me. Although I do not remember much about that night, there is one thing that remains etched in my mind. While sitting at the top of the stairs, I noticed a light shining beneath the door and focused my attention on it. I will never forget how the tiny bit of light provided hope as I was surrounded by darkness.

In this psalm, David wrote about darkness that surrounded him. However, he offered a glimpse into the future. This glimpse into the future is like that tiny bit of light shining beneath the door that focuses the attention of the original readers on Jesus. Today you may be experiencing something that feels like darkness, but place your focus on Jesus who declared, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).

Go experience the light of God through worship.
