So that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Tim. 3:17)
My second grader announced he was beatboxing for the school talent show. While I didn’t want to discourage him from trying or from doing something unique, I was nervous for him. I’d never heard him beatbox before in my life. I don’t beatbox. My husband doesn’t beatbox. And we didn’t know how to help him beatbox. No amount of YouTube videos could make him talent-show ready in just a few days. While we applauded his courage the day he tried out in front of his peers and teachers, it goes without saying that he didn’t win any awards. He was simply not equipped.
And on our own, neither are we. Someday, somehow, we’ll be smacked in the face with the reality that we just aren’t enough. We don’t have the skills. We’re not as good as we thought we were. But the good news is that God is always enough, in everything.
Unlike my poor son, a child of God is not left without the tools to do what God calls him to do. The Father gave us his Word—“God-breathed . . . useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness” (v. 16)—as well as his Spirit. Living dependent on this duo, we don’t have to be ill-equipped for life, for questions, trials, and God-sized dreams. He is enough, and his abundance spills over into us.
Remember God has already given you everything you need.
