“I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?” (John 3:12)
Expanded Passage: John 3:9-12
While touring Biltmore House, the Vanderbilt home in Asheville, North Carolina, I noticed several closed doors. I had this curious desire to open them and see what was there. It was mysterious. What could I learn if I opened the door? It seems that mankind is forever searching for what we do not know.
I empathize in part with Nicodemus. I go deeper into God’s Word and find I do not understand until the Holy Spirit enlightens my eyes to the mysteries of God’s truth. Through the glorious light of comprehension, I see the pure beauty of God’s love. Like Nicodemus, I have an insatiable desire to know more.
Nicodemus has made himself vulnerable. His career has blossomed. He is a ruler of Israel, a member of the Sanhedrin, steeped in God’s Word. But something is missing. He has sought out this man called Jesus in the cover of night. Jesus knows this. He is going to lead Nicodemus to the place he wants to be. But first he will open the eyes to the light. He will tell Nicodemus God’s truth—that he, Jesus, is a witness from God. He has seen and knows what he is talking about.
We’ve all been there; we don’t see clearly or understand fully. Maybe we should stand on and believe what we already know of God’s Word and then search deeper into the mysteries of God’s truth.
Ask God to open your eyes to his truth.
