This is what the ancients were commended for. (Heb. 11:2)

When my family would get together, stories about older relatives who were strong in their faith would flow throughout the room. The accounts were filled with examples of their devotion to the Lord in how they lived in difficult times despite the social challenges of their day. They committed themselves to the Lord in trust and obedience to his Word no matter what they endured.

In Hebrews 11, we find a list of faithful believers from many circumstances and situations who had a good testimony for the faith they demonstrated. This list is not exhaustive but inspired by the Holy Spirit. There may have been other Old Testament believers not listed yet they lived by faith. These believers’ faith was rooted in the faithful promises of God, not in themselves. The trustworthy character of God was sufficient to hold their faith.

Do you ever think about the faith you demonstrate to those looking on? What will they learn from watching your faith in action? Will they be encouraged or disillusioned? Inspired or dismayed? When I remember those family members who stayed the course, I am encouraged. But even if no one hears about your faith, will you live like the ancients and have faith that is honorable? Lord, may our faith be an example and spur other Christians to greater faith.

Set out to show faith that is honorable and encouraging.
