MARGARET WAS PASSIONATE about pursuing this newfound interest. It was as if someone had lit a fire in her to learn and prepare. More than anything else, she wanted to know how to best help women and children who had been victims of domestic violence. She couldn’t wait to become a counselor.

She studied, attended classes, and mentored with strong women and men who had given their lives to this cause. She desperately wanted to impact lives toward healing. When she received the award at the end of her final course, she felt on top of the world.

But when the phone call came, she felt her world crashing down around her. Her own sister’s broken voice on the other end radiated fear and dread. Margaret hardly noticed the street lights as they zipped by her windows. She just needed to get to the center.

Amanda and little Sam were crumpled on chairs in the corner with blankets and hot tea. The tears on their faces and the bruises forming around Amanda’s eye and neck told their story. Margaret’s own sister and niece were afraid and so ashamed. These faces were not the ones Margaret had envisioned as she’d studied. This was not the glamorous rescue she had pictured.

The Lord often leads us in ways we don’t expect. But his plans and purposes for our kingdom impact are higher than we can imagine.
