Listen to today’s devo!

They trusted in him and . . . were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. (Dan. 3:28)

Expanded Passage: Daniel 3:1, 4-6, 12-28

I love to tell a good story. And the best stories I tell are on Sunday mornings with kids as my coauthors. Together, we dress up in robes and crowns, act out plots, and make strange faces and voices. Scripture comes alive in my imagination, and God enables me to invite these young friends into his story, making it come alive for them too. I’ve felt his power at work as the stories exit my lips and heart.

I imagine Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, unhurt after their fiery ordeal, would have shared their story in days to come, perhaps with friends and grandkids. They’d reminisce about the day they stood faithfully together before the king, and God met them in the fire.

Nebuchadnezzar also had an epic story to tell. He’d witnessed firsthand the men’s firm defiance and absolute trust in their God, their commitment to worship him alone, come what may. Their faithful stance and calm response to his fury enabled the king to witness Almighty God at work. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego’s obedience to their King allowed Babylon’s king to witness the fourth man in the flames. His attention had been captured. His assumptions came tumbling down. His lips and heart came alive with praise for the only God who saves.

Who needs you to stand faithfully firm, so that they can also come alive with God’s epic story?

Stand faithfully. Watch God save. Share his living story again and again.
