On Tuesday morning, May 19, delegates and guests at the North American General Conference joined in a collectively reading of a statement affirming the faith and calling of all Wesleyans.
Dr. Jo Anne Lyon introduced the “I am a true Wesleyan” statement and described it as a powerful affirmation. She then invited its author, Reverend Matthew Tietje, to lead the conference body in reading it aloud.
Referencing the “True Wesleyan,” the publication launched by Orange Scott in 1843, Tietje said the reading grew out of a renewed question: “What is a true Wesleyan?”
The murmur of voices filled the room as those gathered read the statement in unison, repeating with conviction a pledge to “exhaust every means and every moment doing all the good I can for everyone I can.” The shared reading served as both a declaration of Wesleyan identity and a renewed call to faithful witness.
