Then the people of the land killed all who plotted against King Amon, and they made Josiah his son king in his place. (2 Chron. 33:25)
Expanded Passage: 2 Chronicles 33:14-25
A few years back my eleven-year-old great-niece was up for a visit. We were sitting on our deck with her “Nama,” my sister, and she was telling me about her wants, which were many. Each time she did this, I whipped out my cell phone and googled the very popular (back in my day) song by the Rolling Stones, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” I got the desired result of the eye roll. She would change the subject but return to it later. I was ready to play that song again.
The people of the land had fifty-seven years of wicked kings, and they had had enough. Even though they had asked for kings because other countries had them and followed these wicked kings in their wicked ways, they got what they wanted and deserved. With humble repentance, the people of God seemed ready for a change.
It is a great blessing to give gifts to young relatives and see them squeal with delight! But getting all the things we want may not always be the best thing for us. I wonder how many eye rolls God sees in a day. I know there are some things I would like to have and have asked God for them. Sometimes I wonder how many times I make his eyes roll when I ask.
Trust that with God we get his best.
