And find out what pleases the Lord. (Eph. 5:10)

It’s a typical evening in our home. The kids finally asleep, my husband and I take a deep breath and put our feet up to unwind. We turn on Netflix, scan the shows available, over and over, intent on finding one that will be suitable for children of light to be watching. The scan lasts quite a while—so many options! We just know we’ll find a winning show trending in the line-up. However, we land back at our short list: Planet Earth and the Great British Baking Show. They guarantee us a refreshing evening, free of ghosts, victims, and darkness.

Ephesians reminds us that we were once darkness. Not anymore, though! The Lord has transformed us to become light, a stark contrast to our former selves. Now we must find out what pleases him. That process produces characteristics much needed in our world. Often, they become ours through time spent on our knees, listening and conversing with our Father. They continue to form in us as we interact with the world’s darkness, but we use new methods starkly different from the norm; we love, care, and seek truth! Light’s characteristics define us now!

That time spent seeking the Lord, finding out what pleases him, must be longer than the time it takes us to flip the channels or scan the news. Children of light, find out what pleases God!

Before you turn on the TV, tune in to the Father of light.
