My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. (Job 42:5)
Our country is in the midst of a storm. As I sit down to write, a worldwide pandemic has threatened the lives of many and taken the lives of friends and family members. Our economy here in the United States is in question, and we distance ourselves from loved ones, wearing medical masks when we leave our homes. On top of that, America has found itself so deeply divided over racism that it has led to violence and rioting. “Where is God?” is a question that has been asked repeatedly during this time of significant suffering.
The book of Job parallels this moment in time we are living in. Not only was Job’s health taken from him, but he also lost his wife, children, and wealth. He felt that God, at best, was far away, and at worst, was punishing him. I recall the season of my life where I also questioned whether God was present, and if he was present, was he good? When we are in storms that disorient us and change the whole trajectory of our lives, we do not need to just know about God. We need to see him.
But how? Through the Word of God we are told to stay alert, be prayerful, be devoted to one another, and to love God and love our neighbors. Then our eyes will see.
Trust God no matter what happens.
