The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever. (Josh. 14:9)

Their cheeks were pink as they climbed the last hill. Grandfather and grandson had explored all day. The valleys and streams, woods and bogs each held mysteries for the wandering pair. Seeing it through seven-year-old eyes made this family land new again for the sixty-eight-year-old homesteader.

The grandfather heard his own father’s voice echo across the breeze as he spoke of berries, salmon migration, and deer tracks to his rambunctious listener. The eager questions amid squeals of discovery seemed to breathe new life into the graying man’s bones. He had worked this land since he was a child. And his father and grandfather before him, always with legacy in mind. As the pair sat on the porch swing to watch long shadows grow, the little boys’ eyes grew wide. For his Grampa shared that the land they walked would someday all be his.

We have a heavenly Father who lives and moves with legacy in mind. And he has given us this beautiful creation to live in as joyful expressions of Jesus’ grace. His voice echoes across the breeze for all who would listen to obey through the twists and the turns of disappointment and discovery.

Just as Joshua and Caleb earned choice land by living in obedience, may we also obey the Lord and be expectant for the beautiful inheritance awaiting us in heaven after our days honoring Jesus on earth are done.

Be eager to obey, remembering your abundant inheritance is in the Father.
