I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. (Lev. 11:44)
Expanded Passage: Leviticus 11:44–45
When I was a child, my grandma, a skilled painter, piqued my interest in painting. She encouraged me to paint by using a simple tool: paint by number. Paint by number is a simple way for a beginning painter to create a pretty picture. The painter simply follows the instructions given, and paints each numbered area of a picture with the corresponding numbered paint color. Even though my grandma would guide me, I would usually get frustrated. It was hard for me to see how the colors I was using would end up working together to create a picture. Not only that, my final product never ended up looking exactly like the source material!
It can be challenging to read commands in Scripture where God calls his people to be holy. How can we be holy? How can we expect to reflect our source material, our perfect and holy God? The beautiful thing about God’s challenge of holiness to us is that he is both the perfect source material and the one who holds the brush of our lives.
God calls us to holiness because he also gives us all the help we need through the power of his Holy Spirit. We don’t have to worry about the final picture of our life if we simply trust our artist, God himself.
Trust God to help you become what he calls you to be.
