I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste. (Song 2:3)
Years ago, while out on an evening run in the woods, I terribly misjudged when the sun would set. I was far from the end of the trail when the sun disappeared and the moon began to rise. With each step, I became increasingly aware of the noises coming from the eerie unknown to my left and right. When I finally reached my car, I was physically and mentally exhausted. An incredible peace washed over my beating heart and aching legs when I pulled into my driveway and realized: I was safe.
Maybe your heart was beating fast as you read about my experience. Regardless of who we are or where we come from, we all value feeling safe. The maiden experiences this safety with her beloved, whom she compares to an apple tree. She finds rest in his shade and sustenance in his fruit. We can find safety in relationships with our spouses, close friends, and family. Above all, we can find true safety and comfort in our relationship with God.
My hand on the door of my car after being lost in the woods was an incredible feeling. It was likely the same as how you feel when you spend time with people who help you feel completely “you” and moments where you understand that with God, you are truly safe.
Live like you truly believe that with God you are safe.
