Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the Lord, who makes you holy. (Lev. 20:8)
Expanded Passage: Leviticus 20:7-8
Maybe you’ve played the party game called “Telephone.” A group of people sit in a circle, and one of them whispers a sentence or phrase into the ear of the person sitting beside them. Then that person, after hearing what the first person said, whispers the sentence to the next person in line. This pattern continues until the last person speaks the sentence to the person who originally invented it. Most of the time, the message is completely different by the time it returns to the first person—and usually the mistakes are quite amusing.
Even though we have language and culture barriers to work through, we are truly blessed to have Scripture be our guide on the path to becoming holy as God is holy. God doesn’t allow his message to get muddled through the passage of time and space—or even through word of mouth! God promised that, if we follow his decrees, way of life, and commands, he will make us holy. In his earthly ministry, Jesus instructed his disciples, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15).
We don’t need to guess at what God asks of us in holiness; it is there for us to understand through his Word and his witness. God’s Word is never off track and always gives us just what we need.
Follow God into holiness through his teachings and example.
