Psalm 32:8–11I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. (Ps. 32:8)

Expanded Passage: Psalm 32:8–11

An acquaintance I hadn’t heard from in a while called me this week. After catching up on our respective work, ministry, and family situations, he said, “I have one more question for you. What are you doing to cherish your wife these days?” The question caught me off guard. Kelly and I celebrate twenty-one years of marriage this year. We do a good job of sharing household tasks, and I do my best to stay on top of the laundry, meal preparation, and cleaning when she’s at work. If she’s sore after being on her feet all day at the hospital where she’s a nurse, I’ll massage her feet if she asks.

But honestly, I haven’t been doing much intentional “cherishing” lately. Being a good roommate or a solid co-parent is not the same as being a loving husband. Sometimes we’re not sure what loving, honoring, and cherishing looks like in a specific season of marriage. Nevertheless, if God cares about every aspect of our lives, including our marriages, God surely has something to say about how we invest in them.

The psalmist says here that God has a loving eye on our lives and our relationships. He also says God will counsel, instruct, and teach us what the next right step is in our marriage and family, if only we stop to listen.

Ask God for counsel regarding the next step in your marriage.
