Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds? (John 4:12)

There is a popular TV show where the CEOs of large companies pose as new entry-level employees then enter into the company’s day-to-day operations. The other employees have no idea of the power and status of the person with whom they are working. The big reveal at the end of these episodes often includes heart-warming gestures of help from the company’s president toward employees who have come into hard times. Sometimes the employees who did not treat the CEO-in-disguise well shrink into the background.

The woman at the well, not knowing who Jesus was, asked Him if He was greater than Jacob, from whose well the Samaritans received life-sustaining water. Jesus answered her question by contrasting the water she got from the well with the living water only He could provide for her. In this big reveal, Jesus showed himself to be significantly greater than Jacob, but what He really cared about was the condition of this woman’s soul.

During this conversation, Jesus gradually revealed who He was to this emotionally wounded woman. When she finally understood the greatness of the man in front of her, she acted. In the same way, let’s leave behind the things that don’t matter in order to bring the good news of God to those who need to hear it.

Reveal Jesus to someone today.
