Listen to today’s devo!

Everyone who sins breaks the law. . . . But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. (1 John 3:4–5)

Poor and illiterate, Nicolasa showed up at our gate asking for help. She had miscarried and needed a procedure, but the hospital insisted it couldn’t be done until she obtained a pint of blood. Even though it was a “just in case” situation, they would not proceed without that blood on standby. For the next few hours Nicolasa and I walked through the city, starting with the hospital and then on to the clinics and labs. None of them sold blood except one, but when they quoted their price, it was way beyond what we could afford. Her only resort was to find a donor, someone who had her type that would be willing to give her some of theirs.

That’s what Jesus did for us. He became our donor. Unlike Nicolasa, however, who needed one for “just in case,” we were in critical condition, living with a terminal disease. Our Donor’s blood was absolutely essential to take away our sin and to bring healing. And just think: He gave it up freely, all because of his love for us.

I don’t know if Nicolasa ever found a blood donor. I hope someone cared enough to give her what she needed. Our blood Donor did more than that. He gave all he had.

Spend time thanking God for the blood that was given for you.
