Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. (Ps. 141:3)
SHIVERS WENT DOWN MY SPINE as I shot out of bed like a human cannon ball. My Goldendoodle was barking at an intense level, which was out of the ordinary. As I rushed downstairs, thoughts of a home invasion flashed through my mind. Was someone trying to break in? Was someone already in my home? I checked on my children first, then turned on all the lights around my house to see what was going on. Low and behold, I discovered the invader. It was a deer traveling through my backyard.
After my adrenaline rush subsided, I pondered my response and reaction. In the physical realm, I’m ready to protect my house at all costs. But, I wondered, do I have the same protective instinct when it comes to the spiritual realm?
The psalmist reminded us to protect or guard what is in our hearts and what comes out of our mouths. For we know that what comes out of our mouths originates in the heart. It’s natural to protect ourselves and our loved ones from physical harm, but we must also be vigilant in the spiritual realm. The Evil One is like a lion, crouching and waiting for our moment of weakness. When we let down our guard, that’s when the Evil One attacks.
