The Lord gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand. (Ps. 20:6)

Each of us battles with temptation. The constant need to be vigilant as we follow Jesus tests our courage, our strength, and our will. Lures, traps, and enticements come in a barrage of temptations. We must be determined to stay on the path where he leads us.

This psalm is a prayer for victory for the king. The psalmist knew the Lord. He knew salvation comes from the Lord. Today we know Jesus is the anointed one who sits at the right hand of God through whom salvation comes. Jesus is victorious over sin and gives victory to those who have turned to follow him. What great comfort we can draw from knowing victory is already won, even as we continue to battle. And such a victory can be ours today.

Through God’s power, we must change to be like Christ Jesus. We must change our thoughts and our habits to be Christlike. Our will must turn to follow his will; then, if what we ask is in keeping with the will of God, how can we not receive it? If the victory we seek is his, how can it not be already won?

Jesus has gone before us. Without him, we have no victory, no salvation, and no eternity in heaven. We must have Jesus to help us fight our battles and win the victory!

Be victorious and follow the One who is victorious.
