“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things.” (John 14:26)
Expanded Passage: John 14:25-26
If you are in trouble—perhaps on the side of the road with your car broken down—and God sends me your way, it’s not going to turn out well. I was on my way to church one Sunday evening and I noticed a car with a flat tire. Of course, I immediately thought, “I can’t stop. I’ll be late for church.” And God said (not audibly, as a friend might, but louder than that), “Are you preaching about the Good Samaritan tonight?” Well, no, but I got the point. So I stopped.
The lady was driving an old Pontiac. Does anyone remember those? Before I got the car jacked up, I tried to loosen the lug nuts. They would not budge. I nearly bent the tire iron, straining until I was grinding my teeth. In the midst of all this, a fellow walked up—I’m pretty sure he was the Holy Spirit wearing the man like a cloak—and he told me to look closely at the stud. Right there in the middle of the stud end was an “L” imprinted. “That means you turn it to the left, not the right,” the man instructed. “Oh.”
In this world of trouble there is only One who really knows what he is doing, and he will teach us what we need to know so we can join him in his redeeming work.
Listen for the Holy Spirit’s instruction.
