But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. (1 John 2:1)
“Can I register for camp now?” is a common question in our neighborhood in May. Although our team wants every child to have a chance to hear the gospel and grow in their faith, every year we as staff need to discuss whether there are any children who should not be permitted to attend camp. Our neighbor Mira* has been one such child. So, we were surprised when another child, Vera* advocated for Mira coming to camp. Even though just months before Mira had kicked her for no apparent reason, Vera said that she believed Mira was repentant and should have the chance to come to camp.
Tears came to my eyes as I realized how much she had forgiven this other girl who had harmed her and offended her several times in the past. We also believed that Vera had started to desire that decisions be made for the good of others and not just herself.
I love the truth found in 1 John 2:1–2, that we—every single one of us—have an advocate! When we sin, Jesus advocates for us and “is the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” He speaks up on our behalf that we may be forgiven, our hearts washed clean of sin, given a new purpose in life and eternal life. How blessed we are to have a forgiving friend such as Jesus!
