Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. (Ezek. 1:28)
Expanded Passage: Ezekiel 1:27-28
I’ll never forget the time my husband told me he didn’t think happiness existed. He had grown up in an environment of abuse and trauma, ultimately leaving home on his own at eighteen, without a role model or anyone he could count on. He unknowingly suffered from PTSD and depression and was unaware life could be any different. When he became a Christian, and began therapy and appropriate medication, his life completely changed.
It was as if he’d been standing in the rain his entire life, not realizing there was better weather somewhere else nearby. When he encountered and accepted the Lord, it was like “the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds.” It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.
I imagine that’s what it was like for Ezekiel, when God showed up in this incredible vision of radiance. There he was, living in exile, not expecting God to appear. But then God did appear.
There are so many times when we live beneath a rain cloud without realizing a rainbow is coming. We can believe God when he says better weather exists and he knows where it is. As amazing as we imagine God to be, his presence is always so much greater. Ezekiel saw this in full form, but we can also witness it when we trust him to lead us.
Believe that God knows better than you.
