A 2011 Barna group poll states that a majority (four out of five) of the American populace claim the Christian faith. This is an interesting, though depressing, numerical statistic. While many Americans may claim to be Christians, their lives portray a vastly different truth. Unfortunately, the title Christian has come to mean churchgoer or one who believes in God. Scripture says otherwise.
John was particularly adamant about the definition. In fact, he made some pretty bold statements for those claiming faith and not living it; he called them liars (v. 4). This leads us to ascertain, then, that a significant number of modern-day Americans are liars.
Jesus never lied. He never cheated on His taxes, He never sinned. Period. John told believers that if they’re going to claim Christ then they must do the things He did, treat people in the same manner He did. That’s a tall order, a difficult directive. Nonetheless, it is the absolute truth.
Herein lies the dilemma: How can one walk as Jesus did without first studying His life and His character? It’s simply not possible, and it would be interesting to see how many people polled claimed Christ but denied reading the Word. One cannot live in Christ without obeying His commands, and that can only be achieved by knowing what they are!
