My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music. (Ps. 57:7)
Expanded Passage: Psalm 57:7-11
When he was growing up, Tom always intended to leave his family’s farm to live in a cosmopolitan city. But after moving to the capital to attend university, he heard God saying that he should return home once he completed his course. Tom did not feel good about this plan, but he continued to trust in God. In his final year, Tom met Shannon, the woman he would later marry. Shannon’s excitement about living on a farm reignited Tom’s love for agriculture and the countryside. Tom was happy to return to farm life because he had Shannon beside him.
As humans, we often have our own ideas of how life should happen for us. When we find ourselves in a place that we don’t want to be in, it is easy to complain and lose faith. Psalm 57 begins with a petition to God and ends in praise. It is believed that King David was in a bad place when he wrote it, but in those times, he switched from murmuring to celebrating the God who held the plan for his life. Life is a journey of learning to trust God more and more. We exercise faith in him when we praise him in the unsettling times.
Acknowledge that God is the only one that knows our end from our beginning, and our lives are in his hand.
Learn to give God praise while you’re in an uncertain place.
