The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. (Ps. 29:4)

My friend Michelle has a little dog, a cross between a Chihuahua and a Scottish terrier, who dotes on every word that comes out of Michelle’s mouth. Little Duke stares at Michelle’s face longingly, practically bouncing in place, just waiting for her to say something so he can do her bidding. My husband recently “borrowed” Duke for a preaching illustration. To everyone’s delight, Duke behaved beautifully on the platform, and happily received the treats Larry rewarded him with. But the moment Duke heard Michelle call him, he bolted from the stage and into her arms without a backward glance at the treats.

In the same way, God’s voice is beautiful to those who love Him. His voice is also powerful beyond measure; He speaks a word, and the world is formed, nations rise and fall, evildoers are crushed. The combination of beauty and power makes the voice of our Lord Almighty more majestic than any musical arrangement you have ever heard, even more majestic than the sound of rushing waterfalls.

I want to be like Duke. I want to be so eager to hear God’s voice that I seek Him with my full attention. I want to adore my Father with complete devotion so that when He speaks I’m immediately in action. I want to worship Him constantly so that I will never miss an opportunity to hear His voice.

Spend time daily in prayer to become familiar with the voice of God.
