Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” (John 6:29)
Sickened by the stench of alcohol, urine, and human waste, Sam could barely breathe. His stomach knotted; he knew the filthy front of this deserted building was home to a street man. Sam had seen him only once, but his face remained burned upon Sam’s heart. A few days later, Sam decided to act. Arriving after nightfall, Sam covered his mouth and nose as he slowly made his way closer, the city noises diminishing into the night’s darkness. Unable to see clearly, Sam searched the scattered mess for any signs of life. Buried under a mound of newspapers, the homeless man stirred but remained passed out. As gently as possible, Sam unfolded the blanket he had brought and laid it across the man’s worn-out body. Quietly praying before leaving, Sam asked the Father to use this offering however He pleased.
The worth and dignity of all life comes not from life itself, but rather because someone made our lives worthwhile. Jesus left heaven to live on earth and declare the treasure of our lives. His love for us, as well as His relational example with others, can change our hearts to mirror His own.
Following Jesus not only brings transformation to us personally, but becomes both the goal and power for serving others as He did. To walk with Him is to follow His daily lead.
Commit to love someone in a new way today.
