Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. (Num. 22:31)
Get a few friends together and make a top ten list of “strange but true” Bible stories. One that many would name is the story of Balaam’s donkey. The Lord opened the donkey’s mouth to speak to Balaam—and that is what most people remember. But later on, another miracle happened, also worth remembering. The Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, helping him realize why the donkey had acted so strangely!
When God opens your eyes, He helps you avoid thinking, speaking, and acting in a way that displeases Him.
He helps you avoid making quick, false judgments about people. Is there a mother who has trouble keeping her kids quiet in church? God can open your eyes to the fact that she’s doing all she can, and that she could really use your help.
God helps you avoid speaking before you think. How many of last week’s words do you wish you could erase from someone’s memory? Too late! But God can open your eyes to the damage possible every time you open your mouth, and give you grace-filled words instead.
God helps you avoid rash actions. Balaam beat his donkey three times, not knowing the animal was reacting to the presence of an angel. Ask God to open your eyes before you act and to help you treat others with consideration and respect.
Ask the Lord to transform your thoughts, words, and actions by enhancing your spiritual vision.
