His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. (Ps. 112:7)

AFTER A RECENT PHYSICAL EXAM and report of good health, I sensed a profound peace and gratitude. What a blessing to live in a healthy body! It performs many secret tasks while I sleep and protects me from invisible germs. But I do live as healthfully as I possibly can. I grow my vegetables organically. I exercise daily. I take multivitamins and sleep well. I don’t eat junk food—all in an attempt to reap a healthy mind and body with which to serve my Lord. I sow what I hope to reap.

In this psalm we read of a man (or woman) who is reaping the rewards of a righteous life. He (she) is blessed and lives without fear. Surely the key to this blessed life is found in verse 1: He fears the Lord and finds great delight in God’s commands. Therefore, “his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.”

The Old Testament emphasizes tangible material blessing as the reward for obedience. Sadly, we know that sometimes righteous people do suffer in material and physical ways. But God gives us peace in return for obedience, and I have discovered that peace is the best of God’s gifts. Seek peace.

Prayerfully seek God’s peace, so you can face anything.
