But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. (1 John 2:1)

IN THE WORLD OF CRIMINAL LAW, a guilty defendant would be a fool to represent himself. Instead, he hires the best attorney he can afford to argue for him. In high-profile cases a good lawyer’s fees may exceed seven figures, yet even at that price there’s no guarantee the accused will be acquitted.

When it comes to the spiritual realm, God has already pronounced the human race guilty. He knows all the facts of the casethat all have sinnedand their fate is eternal punishment. For those who have placed their trust in Christ, it’s quite a different matter. They have an Advocate who will stand before the Judge and declare that although they’re guilty of all charges, they are to be pardoned; for their penalty has already been paid. The blood of Christ has satisfied their judgment.

Christians are being made perfect in Christ. And God’s Spirit dwelling within us gives us the means to repent—to turn away from sin and be made holy. Our Advocate knows our needs and sympathizes with us (Heb. 4:15–16), and it is by His Spirit that we can draw near to the throne of mercy, where He faithfully intercedes with the Father on our behalf.

There should be no fear of punishment for the believer. Our Lawyer is standing by, and we can call on Him to help us. Before our holy God, He’s our perfect defense.

When the Devil accuses you, plead Christ’s sacrifice as your only defense.
