I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation. . . . I can do everything through him who gives me strength. (Phil. 4:12–13)

PERHAPS, NEXT TO JOHN 3:16, Philippians 4:13 is the most quoted passage in the New Testament. It is found throughout religious gift stores on plaques, bumper stickers, greeting cards, and key chains. There is a reason. To read it brings encouragement, peace, and a sense that all will turn out for the best. We can make it through whatever is troubling us by God’s help.

We must, as Paul stated, turn to God in all circumstances―in good times as well as the bad ones. He is not just a holy superhero who whooshes in to save the day. He loves us too completely. He won’t be reduced to only that. He desires to be the ongoing power and purpose of our lives.

That is the secret to true happiness: to realize that our lives will go more smoothly, whether it is a good or a bad day, when we are walking with our Lord. This idea is summed up in verse 19. God will supply all of our needs, every day. Once we truly begin to realize that, we can learn to be as content as Paul was and our faith will be strengthened.

Affirm to God in prayer that it is all in His loving hands, so circumstances matter little.
