For the Lord has a case against his people; he is lodging a charge against Israel. (Mic. 6:2)
Micah 6 reminds me of a mother who asked me to pray for her daughter. With tears streaming down her face, she told me about a recent confrontation. With venom in her voice, the daughter had shouted, “I hate you! You have done nothing good for me. You never let me do what I want to do!”
The mother then said, “My daughter is ignoring all the love we have for her, because she wants to do her own thing, without any accountability.”
Micah’s prophesy portrays a courtroom scene. Those present are the people of Israel and God. The Israelites had accused God of laying heavy burdens upon them. They claimed those burdens were harming them and causing them to be weary.
God then defended himself by recounting all the good things he had done for them: bringing them out of Egyptian bondage, leading them to the promised land, giving them victory over enemy nations, and providing them with all they needed during the exodus.
In essence, God was telling the wayward Israelites, “I have always had the best in mind for you. I have showered you with blessings, and I have kept my covenant promises.”
When you are tempted to find fault with God, take time to remember his faithfulness. Then ask God to search your heart to see if he has reason to bring a case against you.
Make a habit of remembering God’s faithfulness and thanking him.
