Debbie Benson, administrative assistant to President David Medders, reports on the steeple and cross placed on Saunders Irving Chapel at Bethany Bible College. She says, “What a wonderful day of celebration of God’s favor as President David Medders was hoisted 115 feet above the chapel floor to plant the Celtic cross atop the copper-clad steeple, the finishing touch of the three-part steeple that was lifted into place on the new Saunders Irving Chapel on Friday, June 27.

Manufactured in Campbellsville, Kentucky, the nine-foot lantern base of the steeple illuminates from the inside with windows facing the eight points of the compass. The octagonal spire rises over 43 feet above the lantern, topped by a spun copper globe and crowned with a nine foot Celtic cross.

The day ended with a community barbeque including a tour of the chapel and first lighting at dusk – a crowning day in the history of Bethany Bible College.

The chapel will serve as the centre of worship for Bethany’s students as they prepare for a life of service to Christ and the Church. Its cross-shape design symbolizes the mission of the College, lifting up the cross of Christ as the great act of God in our salvation.”

A special Celebration of Consecration weekend is planned for September 5-9.   For full details, check www.bbc.ca

Fishers (Indiana) Town Manager Gary Huff and a dozen town employees spent a full day, and for no pay, in the tiny town of Lewis Creek in Shelby County after the recent flooding there. In addition to helping other residents, they worked at Lewis Creek Wesleyan Church. The church, built in 1935, had two and a half feet of water in the basement. Pastor David Gates says, “We are where we are today because of people like those in Fishers who worked with us, fed us. They were the very first to come to our rescue.”

Not only was the Town of Fishers the first to arrive after the flooding, they sent an ambulance to stand by in case injuries incurred by residents working to remove waterlogged furniture and appliances. For an entire week, the Fishers Fire Department made daily trips to Shelby County, taking food, water, towels, and blankets. The Town is collecting donations to assist residents in the rebuilding process. Pastor Gates says, “We are ever so grateful for their help. The Town of Fishers hasn’t received the recognition that we would like to see them receive.” The Wesleyan Church World Headquarters is located in Fishers. General Secretary Dr. Ronald D. Kelly said “The Fishers community has been very supportive to us, and we appreciate their help to our Lewis Creek Church.”

Germany: God has answered the prayers that many have made on the behalf of the Wesleyan congregation in Munich!  For months the church has been looking for a new location to meet.  As of June 18 the church has rented space on the third floor of an office building.  There is a big meeting room with four smaller rooms.  On July 1 the congregation can begin moving into the new space.  Praise God!
--reported by missionaries Ken and Marilyn Blake

Macedonia: In February 2007, our school in Macedonia launched its first semester. Our first missionaries to Macedonia sent the following praise report on June 17:

Last week we had a "graduation" party for our students, marking the end of our first semester.  We praise God for helping us have a great first semester! In an attempt to continue the relationships with our students, we plan to have English Evenings every Thursday night throughout the summer. Whether it be through games, conversations, a movie, etc., our desire is to create opportunities where discussions about Christ can occur.

Mozambique: Missionaries Jim and Karen Pickett sent the following report:

Jim is in the process of teaching his first membership class at the church at Mutotope. At this point all of our churches in the north have all provisional members, and we are just starting to hold classes about the history, basic doctrines, and membership commitments of The Wesleyan Church. The two churches in Kutuni and Maganha, where he has been holding classes, are finishing their classes on basic discipleship. By the end of this month they should be starting on their membership classes. So the Church in northern Mozambique continues to grow!

World Hope International Anti-Trafficking Visits Capitol Hill (Jun 20)

June 17 and 18 marked important days for World Hope International (WHI) and its efforts to bring attention to the global fight against human trafficking. WHI was welcomed to two separate events to discuss the organization’s work fighting trafficking before members of Congress and the US Department of State.

Ruth Ada Kamara chats with Congresswoman Thelma Drake (R-Virginia) at the June 18 Congressional briefing.

Tuesday, WHI and its partners in the Faith Alliance Against Slavery and Trafficking (FAAST) were hosted at the Department of State by Dr. Laura Lederer, Senior Director for Global Projects and Executive Director, Senior Policy Operating Group, Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (G/TIP), for an informal brown bag luncheon. The luncheon featured a presentation by Ruth Ada Kamara, Education Coordinator, World Relief/FAAST (Sierra Leone), who shared about her work fighting trafficking in Western Africa and her own story as a survivor of trafficking. WHI Founder and CEO Dr. Jo Anne Lyon also spoke about the successes of collaboration between governmental and non-governmental organizations working for a common goal.

Wednesday’s 10:00 am briefing was held at the Rayburn Office Building for the House of Representatives in front of a standing-room-only crowd. The Congressional Caucus on Human Trafficking welcomed WHI and its partners in the Faith Alliance Against Slavery and Trafficking (FAAST) for “Human Trafficking—A Global Perspective & A Community Response” which convened to highlight current multi-sectoral and community-based responses to combating human trafficking, including government, NGO and faith-based partnership initiatives. Ms. Kamara and Dr. Lyon again spoke about their roles in the global fight against trafficking.

After Wednesday’s briefing, Ms. Kamara reflected on her experience. “I am glad to have the opportunity to share my experience with them. It shows they care about people like me who have been trafficked. I hope that telling my story will help stop this from happening to others.” Dr. Lyon emphasized the importance of Ms. Kamara’s presence at the event. “Listening to the story of a person who innocently followed someone whom she trusted to make her life better—but instead was sold and used beyond human imagination—put flesh on the statistics.”

Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery, involving victims who are forced, defrauded or coerced into labor or sexual exploitation. Around the world today, about 27 million people are enslaved. Annually, an estimated 600,000 to 800,000 people—mostly women and children—are trafficked across national borders, which does not count the millions trafficked within their own countries. On May 6, the long-dormant Chaiten volcano blasted ash 20 miles into the sky. Chilean officials ordered the total evacuation of Chaiten, which affected thousands of people. Six inches of ash contaminated ground-water supplies and caused severe flooding in the area. The government has made this area off-limits for at least three months. The Wesleyan Church congregation at Chaiten has been directly affected. According to Carlos Martinez, The Wesleyan Church national superintendent of Chile, there were approximately 130 believers evacuated.

Superintendent Martinez says, "It is a huge challenge. The government has promised help for three months. No one knows the future of the city of Chaiten, if it will be rebuilt in another location, or if each family simple will settle down where they see fit." At this point Chile's national Church board has decided that Pastor Gomez from the Chaiten church, along with those from his congregation who have relocated to Puerto Montt, will plant a church there.

When the idea of launching a brand new church on Staten Island started to invade his thoughts, Todd Seeley originally pushed it aside as absolute craziness. He says, "Without a mother church, any money or any people other than my wife, DuAnne and two young children, the idea seemed to make no sense but I couldn’t shake it. I began to share the idea with my most trusted friends and over time it became clear that this was indeed a calling by God on this season of our lives."

Todd had dreamed many times of planting a new church while under the ministry of Dr. John Maxwell at Skyline church in San Diego. After leaving Skyline and serving for 5 years with The Navigators Church Discipleship Ministry, Todd and DuAnne are now living out their dream of planting a church that helps people find their way back to God as they become passionate followers of Christ who change the world.

The 11th General Conference of The Wesleyan Church lived up to its theme. Remembrances of its past merged with a resolve for its future in a spirit of worship, affirmation, heartfelt deliberation, and jubilant celebration of over 1400 delegates and guests. The historic tenure of its longest serving general superintendent, Dr. Earle L. Wilson, set the stage for the historic election of its first woman general superintendent, Dr. Jo Anne Lyon. Its Forum on Holiness displayed its beliefs in practical and profound ways. Its All Nations Rally brought cultures together in a unity of the faith. Stirring messages by its leaders, including Dr. Thomas E. Armiger and Dr. Jerry G. Pence, challenged Wesleyans to become their best for God. Songs and testimonies became more than notes and lyrics, they became declarations of hearts perfected in love and determination to spread Scripture Holiness throughout the land. It was more than a program fulfilled, it was the answer to countless prayers throughout the world and a core of prayer warriors in the board room of Orlando’s Rosen Shingle Creek Resort. One attendee spoke of a single sermon that he said was “worth the trip.” There were others—some from the platform and others from the smiles and sympathies of hearts made one by a single mission: to help fulfill the Great Commission in the spirit of the Great Commandment.

“What a wonderful statement you have made as The Wesleyan Church,” said outgoing General Superintendent Dr. Earle L. Wilson. “We have been trying to say to the Christian world that we believe in women in the ministry.”

Dr. Lyon said her father, who now is in heaven, trained her to serve the Church. “My father used to tell people, ‘I trained that girl to be a good churchman.’ He didn’t know about gender-specific language.”

In accepting her new assignment, Dr. Lyon challenged the church to go places it never has gone before. “I believe the Lord is positioning The Wesleyan Church to have a voice in the 21st century like never before,” she said.

Dr. Lyon will join Dr. Thomas E. Armiger and Dr. Jerry G. Pence on the Board of General Superintendents. Dr. Armiger and Dr. Pence, both incumbents, were elected to new terms earlier Monday, June 9.
