Summit Addresses Ministry to Orphans

Board of General Superintendent Chair and founder of World Hope International, Dr. Jo Anne Lyon, said there are over 100 million orphans in the world. The Haiti earthquake underscores the problem, with hundreds of thousands orphaned in the country.
For churches interested in orphan ministry or for those who would like to know more about the adoption or foster care process, a summit led by recent director of the faith-based office at the White House, Jedd Medefind, will offer guidelines and training. The Christian Alliance for Orphans, led by Medefind, is sponsoring Summit VI, April 29 – 30, 2010, in Minneapolis, MN. Along with Jedd Medefind, speakers will include John Piper, Mary Beth and Steven Curtis Chapman, Tom David, Dog Sauder, and Al Mohler.
Houghton College Names Associate Dean for Adult and Online Education

Dr. Katherine Buvoltz, Director of Academics for P.A.C.E. (Program for Accelerating College Education) at Houghton College, has been named the Associate Dean for Adult and Online Education at Houghton College, effective March 1, 2010.
Spiritual Formation Launches New Web Site

The Spiritual Formation department of The Wesleyan Church has launched its newly designed HeadHeartHand.com Web site.
The new site allows for all Spiritual Formation resources to be housed in one location, rather than multiple sites with resources divided by age group. Since spiritual formation takes place consistently at any age, making resources readily accessible on one site is important.
Ministries Partner to Bring Biblical Training to North Korea

Leadership materials modified for cultural conditions
Two ministries have partnered to offer leadership training to persecuted Christians in North Korea.
Dr. John C. Maxwell’s EQUIP and The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM) have launched a radio broadcast to provide Biblically-based leadership to North Korean Christians, some of the most persecuted believers in the world.
General Superintendent Emeritus Abbott Dies

Dr. J. D. Abbott, 1922 – 2010
Dr. J. D. Abbott, General Superintendent Emeritus of The Wesleyan Church, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, in Elkhart, Indiana, at the age of 87. Dr. Abbott was elected to the Board of General Superintendents at the 1968 merging conference of The Wesleyan Church, having previously served as General Superintendent of the precedent Pilgrim Holiness Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury, Indiana. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, at the Middlebury Church of the Brethren. Services will be conducted by Pastor Dan Petry, with Dr. Aron Willis, superintendent of the Indiana North District of The Wesleyan Church, giving the homily. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury, Indiana.
Bethany Celebrates 65th Anniversary

Rev. Arnold Stairs, a 1948 graduate, will be among those helping Bethany Bible College (arial view pictured) celebrate its 65th anniversary, April 30 – May 1, during the college’s 2010 commencement weekend. Rev. Stairs and his wife, Leota (Sears), were among the students who met in the Sunday school classrooms of Woodstock Reformed Baptist Church when BBC was known as Holiness Bible Institute. They will join students, alumni, former and current staff, Board of Trustee members, and friends of the college for an anniversary celebration in the Saunders Irving Chapel on campus . . .
Presidential Adviser Will Speak at IWU Human Trafficking Awareness Day

A group of Indiana Wesleyan University undergraduate students is actively joining the fight against human trafficking by hosting a “Break the Chains” community-wide, human trafficking awareness day on April 10 (2:00-5:00 p.m.) in downtown Marion, Indiana. Dr. Laura Lederer, senior advisor to George W. Bush’s administration on trafficking in person, will be featured during the events, which organizers says will focus on bringing awareness to both domestic and international human trafficking.
Wife of South Coastal DS Dies

South Coastal District Superintendent Dan Berry announced, “This morning, [Friday, March 5] at 12:15 a.m., Shelley finished her last lap and crossed the finish line into the very presence of Jesus.” Shelley Berry was the administrative assistant in the South Coastal district office and had served in ministry with her husband in The Wesleyan Church for over 35 years.
On September 10, 2007, the Berrys were returning home in Conyers, GA, from celebrating Shelly’s final radiation treatment for breast cancer when their vehicle was T-boned by a speeding vehicle, resulting in a horrible accident. Shelley was life-lined to an Atlanta hospital, where she would begin a three-year struggle from a brain injury. Her medical reports were seen by thousands of Wesleyans and other friends on the CaringBridge.org Web site, and they were the subject of many special prayer meetings.
Archives Important in Preserving Wesleyan History

College students request information for research papers about Wesleyan history, while some Wesleyans learn of distant relatives who served as ministers with the Church and want to learn more about that loved one. Or when churches celebrate anniversary milestones, the names of former pastors are requested. Research needs vary regularly, and Rev. Greg Teegarden thoroughly enjoys helping fulfill those requests.
Atlantic District Asks 100 People to Pray for Church’s Launch Sunday

Pastor Kevin Myers and the launch team at New Roots Wesleyan Church in Sydney, New Brunswick, Canada, explored thirteen different locations in downtown Sydney to hold their services before choosing the Delta Hotel.
They held two preview services on January 17and February 14, and plan to hold their official launch service Sunday, March 14.
