The law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. (Rom. 8:2)

JIM CARREY, IN THE TRUMAN SHOW, plays the character of a man who has lived his entire life as the star of a reality show without knowing it. The world watches as he brushes his teeth and falls in love, goes to work and loses a parent. He is oblivious to the fact that he is a prisoner in a dome, living under the eye of a camera with actors who fake their relationships with him.

Imagine what it would be like to discover your life is a lie. No matter how pleasant that former life seemed at the time, as soon as you discovered the truth, you would do everything in your power to break free. And you would never go back. Right?

That’s how it is when the Holy Spirit opens our eyes. As soon as we understand what Jesus Christ has done for us, we see things in a totally different way. God’s way becomes beautiful to us. We hate our sinful nature and long to be free of it.

Understanding is not the same as being set free, of course. A spiritual battle must be fought to put the sinful nature aside. We have to escape the dome. The good news is that we will win that battle by the power of the Holy Spirit. He gives us freedom. He gives us life.

Review your behavior for the past week, asking, “Am I truly free?”
