I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. (Ps. 57:1)
FEAR CAN BE AN ENTERTAINING experience when there is no true threat in our lives. Think about the thrilling roller coasters tempting riders each season at amusement parks. Consider the reality programs that charge participants to attempt daring physical challenges or eat frightening concoctions. Several successful books and movies depict future societies where people are sustained by tasteless rations and live gray, hopeless lives. It’s all fun and fascinating when it’s on the big screen or simply pages in a book. However, when fear and worry become tangible and are perceived real, there is no entertainment value at all. In fact, it can be disabling.
When David was at one of his lowest points, he took refuge in God. Though he was under attack verbally and physically, he did not respond in kind. Instead, he spoke to God. He used his restless hours to praise the Lord, rather than to worry. When he did so, he found calm and comfort in difficult times.
While we may not be hiding in caves from murderous kings, there is no shortage of things to worry about or fear. All of us, whether young or old, male or female, are susceptible to this time-consuming, destructive emotion. Perhaps, when we have those crises in life, we should take a lesson from David and rely on a heavenly Hero unlike any in movies or books.
Next time fear and worry come, go to Him for real protection.
