Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Col. 3:2)

WITH NEARLY THREE ACRES OF LAWN, it can be difficult to mow our property in straight lines. I used to begin mowing the lawn along the edge of the property, then carefully put the wheels of the mower in the groove made by my first pass and repeat the process over and over. The result was a mess. The wobbly lines made it look as if I’d been texting and driving the entire time. The secret to making straight lines, I discovered, is not to look at the property line or to look to the right or left, but to fix my eyes on something in the distance and let that be my guide.

In the same way, when we set on minds on things above, the earthly things fall into place. Scripture makes it very clear that when we walk in step with the Spirit, our lives will be better. But don’t read this as some kind of tit-for-tat deal God makes with us: If you do this first, then I’ll do that. Following God’s good law brings natural benefits, just as watering your lawn usually creates green grass and exercising usually produces fitness. Walking in step with the Spirit creates spiritual wellness. Your new self will be renewed in the image of the Creator.

Set aside time today to delight yourself in the Lord.
