Daily Reading: 2 Samuel 22:31–37

As for God, his way is perfect; The word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. (2 Sam. 22:31)

“Are we lost?” my dad’s future mother-in-law asked from the backseat. “No, we’re not,” my dad responded. A few minutes later, she repeated her question for the third time. “We are not lost! This detour turned me around, but I can still get us there,” he said emphatically, trying to hide his agitation and make a good impression on his fiancée’s mom. “Rick,” my mom whispered, “just say you’re lost.”

“Fine,” he mumbled. “We’re lost.”

“Oh, goodie,” my grandma shouted. “Now we can break into the ‘we’re lost’ bag,” she said as she pulled out a bag filled with chips and cookies.

Forty years later, my parents still tell this story because it is so contrary to our expectations. Most, myself included, dislike getting lost. It’s a distraction, keeping me from where I want to be. I get confused, agitated, or even scared depending on where I am.

Second Samuel 22 tells us that God’s way is perfect. There aren’t detours unknown to Him, nor does He get lost along the way. Our trials, fears, and shortcomings don’t act as roadblocks that cause Him to pull out a map in hopes of getting us to where He wants to be. He doesn’t have a “we’re lost” bag or even a Plan B. Instead, He has His good, pleasing, and perfect way.

Trust God today with your path even if it seems uncertain.
