I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. (John 17:4)

Each believer wants to hear Jesus say (like the master in the parable), “Well done, good and faithful servant!” (Matt. 25:21). It’s the commendation and approval that we desire at the end of our earthly journeys. But in order to hear these words, each of us needs to discover—and follow—God’s plan. The Bible gives the big picture, everything we need to know in order to receive salvation and to live a holy life. God may also be trusted to fill in the details by sharing with each of His children the specific work He has for them to do. What is our part in discovering His plan? Here are some tips.

Cultivate an openness to hearing God’s voice. In your daily Bible reading and prayer, leave some open space, some quiet moments when God is free to speak to you about the path He wants you to follow.

Try new things. Don’t be so quick to say no when you’re asked to fill in for a Sunday school teacher, a youth leader, or even your pastor! Such an experience can help immensely; you might find that it fits better than you had imagined.

Listen to the encouragement of other believers. They may see gifts and abilities hidden in your blind spot. They can also confirm the calling God has placed on your life.

Follow God’s plan for your life on a daily basis.
